Both of us love passing through beautiful landscapes and exploring exotic places that we've never known. Driving to Tierra del Fuego (the tip of South America) was basically the longest road trip that we could imagine, from our home in the US. There's plenty to see along the way: tropical jungles, pristine beaches, volcanoes, cloud forests, ancient ruins, colonial cities, the Uyuni Salt Flats, the Andes mountains, glaciers, Patagonia, etc.
For most of the trip, travel can be cheap and there's minimal shipping expenses by staying on one string of continents. Sure, we could do this in Europe or Africa but it certainly cost us more. Our dream is to travel the entire world but Latin America just seemed like a natural first step for us.
"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover" ~ Mark Twain
