Aren't you worried about being robbed?

Thieves are everywhere, including in the community you live in. Anyone can reduce their odds of being robbed by trying not to stand out as a tourist, with a large DSLR camera around their neck and backpack with a laptop inside.

Ladies, avoid the Dolce & Gabbana handbags or anything that says "Look at me! I have nice expensive toys that you don't have!"  It's important to be culturally sensitive and keep in mind what people can actually afford in certain areas. If it looks like the locals don't have much, then don't flash how much you DO have. Avoid jewelry; even a watch makes you look out of place in parts of Latin America. Don't ride the bus listening to your ipod...besides, you might miss out on a great conversation with the friendly construction worker next to you. Keep your valuables locked up and out of site.  Know where your wallet and cash is at all times, especially in large crowds.  This is all common sense anywhere in the world, even in your hometown or Chicago.

Most criminals are creatures of opportunity, if they see a camera or laptop sitting on your car's seat then there's a great chance for a smash n' grab. Sorry about your window.  There are millions of people out there who are willing to do anything for a quick buck, don't make their lives easy by presenting them the perfect opportunity to take.

Here's another brainbuster: don't go downtown at night, walking through dark streets to the discoteca...several Tequila shots later, stumbling back to where you think your fancy hotel is located in the tourist zone. This is how you become a victim.  Have I done this before?  Yes in my younger days unfortunately.  I'll admit that, but if you avoid this activity then you avoid being a victim.

If this still scares you, then lock all your doors and hide inside of your secure homes…we'll be out enjoying the world!

ARE YOU WORRIED ABOUT BEING TARGETED AS AS AMERICANS?
We've had some people recommend that we fly a Canadian flag on our vehicle because supposedly Canadians receive less attention abroad. I feel like this is a little ridiculous. The reason Americans seem to experience problems abroad is because of their actions and not adhering to the local cultures. This is your typical obnoxious personality, who has too many drinks, demands attention, and tends to make culturally insensitive remarks. I've met a few in our travels and it always encourages me to be a better diplomat for my country.  I try to prove to locals that Americans can be friendly and open to leaning about the outside world.

We also avoid religion and political discussions outside of our family and close friends...people forget about this rule, and I think it's equally important in your hometown because both subjects can be taboo. There's so much more in life that you can talk about with strangers or new friends without having to offend someone.
